Temple Reviews - Issue 10

I thought I’d resurrect the old Temple tradition of reviewing work that appeared in the latest issue.

So, let’s just start by saying I really enjoyed the brilliant B-Movie style cover which sets up the theme for the issue very nicely. Nice work there, Malcolm!

Paul Eldridge – the Lifeboat strip had some great snappy dialogue, though my favourite of the strips was definitely your collaboration with Chow on Encounter. The 1950’s style of his artwork complemented the B-movie alien encounter perfectly. I liked the straight-faced delivery of the strip, building up nicely to the inevitable punch line.

Malcolm Kirk – the Mag, Scientist strip was most amusing, especially the Knight Rider references. I always enjoy the brightly coloured nature of your strips, and the large quantities of chuckles per page.

Simon Mackie. Interesting piece on the punk movement. I liked the circular nature of the Coffee Club strip, and I could very much sympathise with the aliens in the Findings From Progon strip, as I seem to be encountering more and more ‘I.N.E.P.T’ stats in my day job (by the way, what does the T stand for in INEPT?).

Tim West – Teddy bears’ Picnic was one of my favourites in the Hallowscream anthology, so thanks for reproducing it here. A very well paced strip with well polished and professional art from Glen Ostrander. Although the art on Pirates isn’t quite as polished, Nathaniel Allen certainly has a gift for drawing hideous pulsating sea beasts. Very Cthulu-esque.

Greg Meldrum and David Broughton. A well-polished and thoroughly enjoyable first contribution. The Martillo strip had great artwork; I especially liked the hard edged angular nature of the characters. Very amusing script as well; I enjoyed the complete lack of subtlety that Martillo displays when dealing with his exorcisms (when in doubt, bash it with a sledgehammer). Favourite line? ‘I shall require an open window. And this goat.’

Tony Suleri – another wealth of terrific sketches and previews. I think my favourites were probably the Slum Droid pages; excellent watercolours and a very individual style which sets you apart from the artistic crowd. Nice to see the Technofear, Way Of The Dead and Marren Kane previews too. I’m looking forward to getting my teeth stuck into all those projects now life’s settled down a bit.

In conclusion, a mighty fine issue there chaps! If anyone else fancies reviewing work that appeared in the issue (whether you’re a contributor or not), then feel free to leave comments here.

FROM THE DEPTHS OF SPACE... The tenth issue of the Temple APA digital comics showcase is now available for free download.

This issue contains 60 pages of artwork and strips by a host of creators, including Tony Suleri, Dave Hailwood, Simon Mackie, Paul Eldridge, Greg Meldrum, Tim West and Malcolm Kirk, (who also compiled the issue and created the cover artwork).

Temple 10 test issue available to download

A test version of the latest issue is now available if you right click HERE!

Don't share the link yet. This is a test issue to check everything is alright with it. Download, read, look for any mistakes, let me know if it's okay or if something's gone horribly wrong.

Once we know what's what, I'll post the link again in a couple o' days time, with any ammendments made, a cover pic and some nice blurby stuff and you can share away then.

Temple 10 Deadline Reminder

Hi folks,

just a quick reminder that the deadline for contributing to Issue 10 of the Temple Showcase is this Sunday (hopefully I'll have proper home broadband by then, and will be able to send something myself). The email address for sending contributions to is at the top of the page.

I look forward to seeing what people come up with!

New Temple Site

Hello folks,

Welcome to the new home of The Temple APA - the UK's longest running comic Amateur Press Associations.

Our most recent social site has given in to the march of capitalism and will become a 'paying members only' site from January 1st, which is why we're all getting the heck out of there (I found the socialgo site awkward to use and contained a number of irritating bugs, so it's actually quite a relief to be moving on).

Rather than start another free social network site only to have that go 'payment only' on our asses after a few years, this blog will act as our base of operations.

I'll be inviting a number of key Temple members to contribute to the blog, which means they can create posts about upcoming projects/comic news/reviews etc (no mature content though, as this site's open to everyone. Save that sort of thing for the Temple Showcases).

If you're a newcomer and wish to contribute comic art/writing to the latest Temple Digital Showcase then leave a comment on the 'Who's Contributing?' post and send your work to Malcolm Kirk (the Temple's Central Mailer) at the Temple email address (to be found at the top left of the site) in the appropriate format before the deadline. If you're unsure of what your contribution should look like, then check out the previous Temple Showcases which are downloadable as free PDF's.

Remember, the Temple is for everyone - amateur and professional alike - as long as you're active (or wish to become active) on the UK comics scene.
